Intrigued by the reality of social constructs, I attempt to identify connections between my ideas and form language. I am driven by the conceptual and the physicality of making objects. Adorning the body to make a statement, I attempt to recognize or commemorate. I am inspired symbolically through cultural and social frameworks. My work is always within a feminist context.
Most currently, my work is about domesticity and beauty: specifically the women’s role as housewife and how this role has suffered. It is an exploration, of this loss, compared to the flourishing career woman of the 21st century.
I question the ideals of femininity. What is beauty? What is feminine? Can women have both successful careers and healthy home lives? I find the richness of the American Victorian period a positive definition of feminism. At that time, women were gaining more independence in the United States and were still vital within the family. Researching this period I reflect on modernity, for example; the industrial revolution compared with the powerful technological advances we experience everyday and ordinary beauty defined within pop culture.
